Membership

The BAWPVA has almost 600 members. To qualify for membership an individual must meet the following criteria: - A citizen of the United States
- Was regularly enlisted, inducted, or commissioned, and was accepted for or on active duty in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard of the United States or an ally of the United States
- Was separated from the Armed Forces under conditions other than dishonorable or is on active duty or must continue to serve after the cessation of hostilities
- Has suffered a spinal cord injury or disease (such as MS, ALS), whether or not service connected in origin

Sports & Recreation

The BAWPVA sponsors various wheelchair sporting events. BAWPVA is the primary sponsor for the Santa Cruz Wheelchair Bowling Tournament held every year in October. The chapter also sponsors individual members at various sporting events that they are interested in. BAWPVA sponsors a team to the National Veterans Wheelchair Games which is a national wheelchair sporting event that holds different types of sporting events. We also sponsor a team to the Winter Sports Clinic in Snowmass, Colorado.
The BAWPVA has an active recreation program at the Palo Alto VA Hospital's SCI Center. Throughout the year we fund awards for weekly bingo, a football guessing contest during the football season, Friday night "Movie Nights" for inpatients, cater meals for all holidays, provide a Tuesday morning brunch for inpatients and staff of the SCI Center, along with various other activities throughout the year. Advocacy
|
The chapter's Director of Advocacy & Legislation, David Hollingshead, Esq., is respons ible for advocating for the civil rights of the members. This includes following up on any complaints of violations of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). He also follows through on any complaints of members being treated unfairly due to their disability. Mr. Hollingshead is also tasked with dealing with our local and state governments while focusing on the needs of Veterans and people with disabilities. He also assists our national organization as needed in efforts addressing federal legislative and regulatory actions. Mr. Hollingshead keeps the membership of the chapter informed of current legislation through his bimonthly report in the chapter's newsletter.
